PHI (Protected Health Information)

Identifying patient data covered by HIPAA and similar regulations.

PHI is any information that can identify a patient — name, MRN, dates, addresses — held in DICOM tags or burned into the pixels (e.g. a name stamped on an ultrasound frame). De-identification has to address both surfaces, which is why dcmage pairs tag scrubbing with OCR detection and region redaction.
