Private/unknown tag editing with inline warning

Edit private or unknown tags with an inline warning about VR and downstream impact.

Problem

DICOM files often contain private (odd-group) tags or unrecognized public tags that standard viewers flag as non-standard. You need to edit their values — for example, to remove vendor-proprietary data during de-identification or to correct misencoded values — but you must be warned that these tags fall outside the public DICOM dictionary.

Steps

1. Open the file (⌘O) and switch to Edit mode (⌘3).

2. Filter for a private tag (e.g. (0009,0010)) or an unknown tag. The tag tree displays an inline warning badge or highlight indicating the tag is non-standard.

3. Edit the value — double-click and enter the desired replacement. The warning persists until the value is saved.

4. Save the edit. The gold modified highlight appears on the row.

5. Undo (⌘Z) reverts the edit and restores the original value.

Result

Private and unknown tags carry a warning indicator but stay fully editable — you are informed, not blocked. Saved edits turn gold and are individually undoable.
