Anonymized teaching cases

Turn a real study into a de-identified teaching case while keeping the diagnostic findings intact.

Problem

You need to create a library of anonymized teaching cases for medical education. Each case must be fully de-identified (Safe Harbor standard) but retain enough clinical context (modality, body part, findings) to be educationally useful. Patient names should be replaced with case identifiers.

Steps

1. Open the DICOM file — click Open files… (⌘O).
2. Switch to Anonymization mode — click the Anon tab (⌘2).
3. Select Safe Harbor profile — pick “Safe Harbor (18 identifiers)” for full de-identification.
4. Add teaching metadata — use the Custom profile to inject teaching-specific private tags or replace PatientName with a case ID (e.g. CASE-042^TEACHING).
5. Apply — click Apply & Export. The exported file is fully de-identified.
6. Verify — load the exported file. All 18 HIPAA identifiers are removed. PatientName shows the teaching case pseudonym. Clinical tags are preserved for educational context.

Result

All 18 Safe Harbor identifiers are removed and Patient Name becomes an educational pseudonym (e.g. CASE-042), while clinical context tags stay intact — a teaching case fit for public or institutional use, with your original file untouched.
