Second-opinion export
Package a study for a clean hand-off to an outside reader for a second opinion.
Problem
A referring physician needs a second-opinion consult and must send the patient imaging to a specialist at another institution. The export must be de-identified (or contain only the minimum necessary identifiers) and include all relevant series and priors in a single transfer package.
Steps
- Open the patient study — click Open files… (⌘O) and load all relevant DICOM files (current study + priors).
- Switch to Anonymization mode — click the Anon tab (⌘2).
- Select Limited Dataset profile — pick “Limited Dataset” from the profile picker. This retains dates (needed for clinical context) but removes direct identifiers.
- Review and customize — if a Custom profile is needed, add rules to keep specific tags the specialist requires (e.g. Accession Number, Study Description).
- Apply and export — click Apply & Export. The exported DICOM file is de-identified per the selected profile.
- Include a DICOMDIR — use Export → DICOMDIR to create a media storage directory with an index file for easy import by the receiving institution.
- Verify — load the exported file and confirm all PHI is removed while clinical context tags (Study Date, Modality, Body Part) are preserved.
Result
Direct identifiers are removed or pseudonymized while temporal tags (a Limited Dataset) and clinical context (Modality, Body Part, Study Description) are kept; a DICOMDIR is generated for multi-file exports, leaving a package ready for secure transfer to the consulting institution.
