Ear/dental/skull-feature removal

Propose redaction boxes over the ears, jaw, and back of the skull on a head slice, then add your own.

Problem

Head CT scans may show features other than the face that can help re-identify a patient: ears, dental work, and skull contours. You want redaction boxes over those regions as well as over the face.

Steps

1. Open a head CT/MR scan. Click Open files… (⌘O).
2. Switch to Anonymization mode. Click the Anon tab (⌘3 in the Mac app, ⌘⇧A in the browser).
3. Run Auto Deface. Click Auto Deface in the Redaction regions section. It proposes five boxes on the slice shown in the viewport: face, left ear, right ear, jaw and dental arch, and back of the skull.
4. Check the ear boxes. Each ear box is a narrow strip at the side of the estimated head outline. Confirm it covers the ear on this slice. A proposed box cannot be moved or resized: delete it with its ✕ button and draw a replacement with the redact tool if it is off.
5. Add boxes where needed. Where dental work or other features fall outside the proposed boxes, draw more redaction regions with the redact tool.
6. Apply and export. Click Apply & Export. The exported file is the active instance with the pixels inside every box set to zero (in every frame of a multi-frame file).

Result

The exported instance shows black rectangles over the proposed and hand-drawn boxes, and pixels outside them are unchanged. The proposals are computed from one slice with fixed proportions of the head outline, so check them on your data.
