Format conversion

DICOM → PNG/TIFF/JPEG

Export frames as PNG, TIFF, or JPEG for documents and presentations.

Problem

You need to convert a DICOM series to standard image formats (PNG, TIFF, or JPEG) for use in presentations, reports, or non-DICOM workflows. The conversion must preserve the current window/level settings, spatial orientation, and optionally apply anonymization.

Steps

  1. Open the DICOM file — click Open files… (⌘O).
  2. Set the desired window/level — use the WL tool to adjust tissue contrast. The exported image reflects the current WL settings.
  3. Anonymize if required — switch to Anon mode (⌘2), apply PHI scrubbing, and enable Clean Pixel Data to remove overlays.
  4. Export as image — use the Export menu and select the target format: PNG (lossless, web), TIFF (lossless, archival), or JPEG (lossy, email).
  5. Verify — open the exported image. Confirm the window/level matches the viewer, no PHI overlays remain (if anonymized), and the image dimensions are correct.

Result

The exported image matches the viewer’s current W/L at the DICOM frame dimensions — lossless as PNG/TIFF, quality-adjustable as JPEG — with no burned-in PHI when Clean Pixel Data is enabled. Metadata can be exported separately as a sidecar.
