Modality reclassification

Change the Modality tag when a study was acquired under the wrong modality code.

Problem

A DICOM study was tagged with the wrong modality — e.g. a CT scan is labeled “MR” due to a modality worklist mismatch. The Modality tag (0008,0060) controls which hanging protocol the PACS applies, which toolset the viewer loads, and how the study is indexed in search. A wrong modality means radiologists see the wrong display layout and measurement tools.

Steps

  1. Open the file (⌘O) and switch to Edit mode (⌘3).

  2. Filter for Modality (0008,0060) and double-click to edit.

  3. Enter the correct modality code — e.g. CT, MR, CR, DX, US, NM, PT, XA, RF, SC. The CS VR accepts any short string.

  4. Click Save change.

  5. If you also need to adjust series-level descriptors to match the new modality (e.g. Body Part Examined, Series Description), edit those tags as well following the workflows in the adjacent use cases.

Result

The Modality shows its corrected code in gold, so the PACS applies the right hanging protocol and tools. The change is counted by the dirty counter and is undoable.
